5 Easy Ways to Make Your Car Run Longer

5 Easy Ways to Make Your Car Run Longer

Most auto mechanics will tell you that a car can run forever as long as it is properly maintained. That reigns mostly true, say auto repair experts. They point to the world record holder for the longest running car. That honor goes to a man by the name of Irv Gordon. Mr. Gordon has racked up an incredible 3 million miles in his 1966 Volvo P1800. However, even the best auto mechanic won’t expect his car to run that many miles. But with careful auto repair and maintenance, a car enthusiast can expect their car to drive well over the 200,000-mile mark. There are lots of things to watch out for in cars that are racking up the mileage. Here are 5 things you can do to help make sure your car is in its best condition to reach that 200,000-mile milestone, and beyond.

Replace Worn Car Tires and Rims

When it comes to keeping your car running longer, it's best to start at the bottom, literally. Your car tires and rims affect your fuel economy and stopping distance. They also affect wear on your suspension system and drivetrain. That’s why it’s important to make sure your car or truck tires are properly inflated. You should also periodically check to make sure there is enough tread on your tires.

Perform Regular Oil and Filter Changes

Oil is the lifeblood of your car. You don’t have to be an auto mechanic to know to regularly perform an oil change. However, just sticking to the regular schedule does not make the process foolproof. Make sure your auto mechanic uses the proper amount of oil, at the proper viscosity for the car’s engine. Also, make sure the oil filter is properly fitted and tightened to prevent possible leaks. But an oil change is more than just the oil and oil filter. A good auto repair expert will also make sure that the air filter is clean. The filter, like a mask, cleans the air your car takes in. A new air filter isn’t always necessary to keep your car running at its best. Taking a look at the air filter will help you determine if the air your engine is breathing is clean, and if the filter itself needs replacing. Most of the time, a few blasts of air from an air compressor will clean the filter well enough.

Check and Change Your Transmission Fluid and Filter

A car’s transmission system does not need checking and changing as often as an oil change. However, making sure to regularly check and maintain the transmission fluid and filter is critical to avoid overheating and internal damage to your car’s engine. Like oil, it’s a good idea to check your transmission fluid regularly. If you notice a strong burning smell or dark discoloration of the reddish-pink transmission fluid, it’s probably time for a transmission fluid and filter change.

Regular Wheel Alignment Service

After going through cracks, potholes, and other nasty hazards on the road, the suspension of your vehicle eventually starts to fall out of balance. If the alignment is not in balance, you will experience uneven wear on your tires, and can cause your steering to pull to the right or left. Having your auto repair shop perform a 4 wheel alignment once in a while helps all wheels stay lined up with each other. This will help keep your car’s steering properly centered.

Keep Your Machine Nice and Clean

Keeping your car clean inside and out not only helps your car look (and smell) nice but also helps to protect it. Washing and waxing helps preserve your car’s paint job. Regular washing and waxing also helps prevent rust from forming on a car’s exterior. On the inside, vacuuming up sand and dirt from interior seats and carpets helps to minimize premature wear. Excessive wear on a car’s interior can lead to tears and holes in the fabric, and lower the resale value of the vehicle.
